Monarchs Blast Le Moyne, 9-0
NORFOLK,VA (March 4) - Old Dominion's baseball team got back on the winning track today with at 9-0 shutout victory over Le Moyne at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex. The win snaps the Monarchs seven game losing streak as they improve to 3-9-1 on the year, while the Dolphins fall to 1-4.
The game was scoreless until the Monarchs broke through with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Monarch second baseman Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, VA) was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Brent Sollenberger's (Chambersburg, PA) sacrifice bunt and then scored on John Oehler's (Audubon, NJ) double.
Oehler advanced to third on a throwing error by the dolphins rightfielder and then scored on the first of four wild pitches thrown by Dolphin pitching in the inning. Shortstop Tim Hummel (Montgomery, NY) then doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on another wild pitch. Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ) then walked, before Dolphin pitching loaded the bases, and scored when Joe Troilo (Avondale, PA) walked, giving the Monarchs a 4-0 lead.
In their half of the sixth, the Monarchs pushed across four more runs as Oehler doubled home Sollenberger and then scored on Musolf's single, while Hummel walked and later scored on Joe Troilo's grounder. Old Dominion scored another run in the eighth to go ahead, 9-0.
Oehler was 2-for-4 on the day, with two doubles and two RBI, while Troilo was 1-for-4 with four RBI. Monarch starter Brian Ross (Portland, ME) earned the win, tossing seven stellar innings, allowing just five hits, while walking none and striking out seven.
The two teams meet again on Sunday in the final game of the three-game series at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex at 1 pm.
