NORFOLK, VA. - Tim Miller, chairman of ACS Systems and Engineering, Inc., will be honored as the 26th recipient of the Bud Metheny Award at the ACS Systems "Meet the Stars" Banquet, Jan. 24 at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott. The banquet begins with a social at 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. This year's keynote speakers will be pitching greats Steve Carlton and Luis Tiant.
Tickets for the banquet are $50 per person, and on sale at the Old Dominion Athletic Ticket Office in the Athletic Administration Building. The Greenwich Kitchens Baseball Clinic will be Saturday, Jan. 25 in the Old Dominion University fieldhouse. Tickets are $5 for one session, beginning at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the dinner and clinic support baseball scholarships at Old Dominion.
Tim Miller's generous contributions to Hampton Roads amateur sports has helped young athletes fulfill a dream of becoming the best they can be. Tim has not only helped young men in their athletic endeavors, but also contributed to scholarship funds to enable these student athletes to pursue a college education.
In heading ACS Systems and Engineering, Inc., a telecommunications company Miller founded 11 years ago, Tim has converted his love of technological challenges into an enterprise that employs 250 people and fulfills millions of dollars of contracts annually, servicing both private and government interests.
Both ACS Systems and Miller have been honored by the community many times, as evidenced in the company lobby with the large number of trophies, plaques and commendations awarded for philanthropic and civic endeavors.
"As a company, we are committed to giving back to the community ten per cent of our profits," Miller says. "This is something that is understood and supported by every individual in the company." Contributions range from supporting local schools to Boys and Girls Clubs, to athletics, and to supporting cancer research.
"I believe that if you have the ablility to help, you should. You only need so much to live on. If you have that, why do you need to keep the rest of it," adds Miller.
Miller is committed to helping children succeed in meeting their goals. " I would like to pick up the paper some day and not see any stories about teenagers being shot, or doing drugs...there are a lot of great kids out there. I will never stop trying to make their lives better. Maybe I can't make it all right, but I can help make it a little bit right. I want to make a difference in just one child's life, " he says.
