Blue Devils Edge Monarchs in 10th, 3-2
DURHAM, NC (March 7, 2001) -- Pinch-hitter Brian Patrick single in the bottom of the tenth inning lifted the Blue Devils of Duke University to a 3-2 victory over Old Dominion Wednesday afternoon.
The Monarchs (3-12) opened the scoring in the top of the second when designated hitter David Vilardi (Fishkill, NY.) drove in Jeff Eure to put ODU up, 1-0.
Duke answered back in the bottom of the second when Wes Goodner scored after Drew Jordan grounded out to second to tie the score at 1-1. Duke scored in the bottom of the sixth when David Mason singled home J.D. Alleva for a 2-1 lead.
The Monarchs tied the score in the seventh as Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.) singled with one out to score Matt Moye (Beaver Falls, Pa.).
Freshman Allen Strick (Glenn Burnie, MD.), Mark Michael (Gobbstown, NJ.) and catcher John Oehler (Audubon, NJ.) each had two hits on the day for The Monarchs.
ODU returns to action on Saturday with a two-game series with UNC Charlotte, beginning at 2 p.m.
