Monarchs Defeat Maryland, 12-5 In Baseball

CHARLESTON, SC. (Feb. 12) -- Junior pre-season All-American shortstop Tim Hummel (Montgomery, NY.) went two-for-three with a double, home run and four RBI as the Monarchs of Old Dominion defeated Maryland, 12-5 in the second round of the Citadel Trademark Classic.

ODU improves to 1-1, while the Terrapins fall to 0-2. The Monarchs will play N.C. State Feb. 13 in the third and final round. Game time is 1:30 p.m.

Hummel put the Monarchs on top, 1-0 in the first inning with a solo home run. ODU made it 2-0 in the third when Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.)singled and later scored on a groundout by senior Joe Troilo. After Maryland took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third with the help of a two-run double by Jason Mohap, the Monarchs scored nine runs in the next three frames. Hummel had a three-run double in the sixth inning.

Monarch starter and winning pitcher Shawn Weaver (Loganton, Pa.)hurled six complete innings and allowed five hits and three earned runs while walking three and striking out seven.

Sophomore thirdbaseman Jeff Eure(Pillow, NJ.) collected three hits while Joe Troilo(Avondale, PA.) added three RBI.
