Seven Sign With ODU Baseball

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion University head baseball coach Jerry Meyers has announced the signing of seven student-athletes to national letters-of-intent in the early signing period for the 2006-07 school year. Meyers and assistant coaches Ryan Morris and Nate Goulet have assembled a recruiting class which consists of five high school and two junior college signees.

The 2006 recruiting class includes: Infield/outfielder Robbie Watkins (Newport News, VA./ Menchville HS.), infielder Jake McAloose (Virginia Beach, VA./ Princess Anne HS), infielder Gerard Hall (Washington, DC/ Gonzaga HS ), outfielder/left hand pitcher Cory Toth (Chincoteague, VA./ Chincoteague HS), catcher Joe Velleggia (Monkton, MD./ Calvert Hall HS), right hand pitcher Ryan Bergh (Reddick, FL./ Pensacola JC), and catcher David Burns (Jacksonville, FL./ Lake Sumter CC).

"I am very excited about this recruiting class," said Meyers. "We were able to address some specific needs with this group of talented student-athletes who have been outstanding performers on the field and in the classroom. We are fortunate to be a part of a great University and athletic department which has helped us attract another strong recruiting class that will make a big impact on the future of Old Dominion University Baseball."

ROBBIE WATKINS 6-0, 170 INF/RHP -L/R- Newport News, VA. Menchville HS The 2005 Player of the Year in the Peninsula District. He hit .492 last spring and was named first team All-Peninsula district as a pitcher. He was also selected first team All- Region. In 2004 Watkins was second team All-District as a utility player.

JAKE MCALOOSE 5-11, 175 INF R/R Virginia Beach, VA. Princess Anne HS Second team All-Tidewater selection at third base. Hit .410 for the Virginia AAA State Champions at Princess Anne High School. Named first team All-Beach District at third base and second team All-Region.

GERARD HALL 5-8, 145 INF S/R Washington, DC - Gonzaga College HS A two-timeAll-Conference selection in 2004 and 2005. Was also team captain last year. Played for the Virginia Barnstormers.

CORY TOTH 5-10 170 LHP/OF L/L Chincoteague, VA. - Chincoteague HS The Eastern Shore district Player of the Year in 2005. Toth hit .571 with four homers and as a pitcher compiled a 6-0 record with 74 strikeouts in 51 innings. Also selected first team All-District as a sophomore and junior.

JOE VELLEGGIA 6-6 230 C R/R Baltimore, MD. Calvert Hall College HS In 2005 Vellegia hit .486 with 13 homers and 52 RBI. He led the state of Maryland In homers and helped lead Calvert Hall to a number seven ranking in USA TODAY Top 25 High Schools. Named first team All-Metro and All-County. Participated in the AFLACK Perfect Game Showcase held in Towson, MD.

RYAN BERGH 6-4 235 RHP R/R Reddick, FL. - Pensacola JC. Led Pensacola Junior College with 25 appearances in 2005. In high school he was first team All-District and second team All-State selection in Florida.

DAVID BURNS 6-2 200 C L/R Jacksonville, FL. Lake Sumter CC Burns was second team All-State selection in 2004.
