Monarchs Roll by Tribe, 15-6 to Earn CAA Top Seed

    WILLIAMSBURG, VA. (May 13, 2000) -- Old Dominion University pounded out 21 hits in a 15-6 victory over William and Mary on May 13 to clinch a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and the number one seed at this week's conference tournament at Coy Tillet Field in Manteo, NC. The Monarchs will play eighth seed William and Mary on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

    The Monarchs are 32-20-1 overall and 14-7 in the CAA. East Carolina by virture of sweeping UNC Wilmington is also 14-7 in the CAA, but Old Dominion wins the tie breaker from their conference sweep of the Pirates back on April 21-23.

    Senior Joe Troilo (Avondale, Pa. ) and Jared Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.) each pounded out four hits on the day. Troilo knocked in three runs and Musolf two. Tim Hummel (Montgomery, NY.) had three hits and three RBI along with Jeff Eure (Pillow, Pa,). Eure his his sixth homer of the season in the fourth inning with Musolf aboard. Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, Pa.) also had three hits.

    The 21 hits were the second most by the Monarchs this season. Old Dominion had 30 against Norfolk State. Every Monarchs starter reached base and all but one had atleast one hit.

    Freshman Mike Hoover (Gloucester, Va.) won his fourth straight game. He scattered ten hits and fanned three. Jon Tinkham (Chesapeake, Va.) and Brian Ross (Portland, ME) pitched the last two innings. William and Mary was led by Tim Jones with three hits and Trey Wakefield with three RBI.
