VCU Defeats Monarchs, 2-0
April 10, 2004
NORFOLK, VA. - Barrett Ripley's two-out bases loaded single in the sixth scored Paul Swack and Scott Sizemore, while pitchers Harold Mozingo and Cla Meredith scattered five hits to lead Virginia Commonwealth (20-13/6-2) over Old Dominion (13-18/3-5), 2-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest Saturday evening at the Bud Metheny Complex.
Ripley's hit broke up a scoreless pitchers duel between ODU's Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, Va.) and VCU's Harold Mozingo. With two outs in the sixth, Swack, Sizemore, and Anthony Granato all singled to load the bases. Ripley lined a hit just over the shortstops glove to give VCU its first runs of the series.
Mozingo improved his record to 5-1 as he walked two and fanned one in six-plus innings. Meredith came on in the seventh after Derek James (Terre Haute,IN) doubled and fanned five of the nine batters he faced to pick up his sixth save of the year.
ODU had two runners on in the sixth but the Rams turned one of their three double plays on the night. Smith took the loss (3-2), going six-plus innings with seven strikeouts, no walks, two runs and nine hits. The same two teams will play the third and final game of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m.
