Smith and Chipman Help Lead Lehigh Valley to ACBL Championship

NORFOLK, VA.-- Rising juniors Donnie Smith (Portsmouth, VA.) and Evan Chipman (Raleigh, NC.) helped lead Lehigh Valley Catz to the 2003 Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League Championship.

Smith a righthander was unanimously named the ACBL Pitcher of the Year for compiling a 5-0 record and a minuscule 0.66 ERA in 40.2 innings pitched. He also had 60 strikeouts and only 12 walks. In the ACBL playoffs,he was 1-0 after pitching the win in the semi-final game, then on one day's rest pitched the last two innings in saving the title game. Lehigh defeated two-time defending champion New Jersey, 10-7.

Evan Chipman, who was second in the CAA in stolen bases last season shattered the ACBL single-season record of 44 (set in 1986) with a whopping 54 during the ACBL season. The previous record holder was Dana Brown, now head of scouting for the Montreal Expos.
