NORFOLK, VA.--Junior righthander Jason Godin (Stafford, VA.) set a new ODU single game strikeout mark of 18 as Old Dominion (33-5/16-1) defeated Northeastern (14-14/8-6) Saturday evening, 3-0. Godin is now 8-0 on the season, 5-0 in the CAA for the 15/17th ranked Monarchs.
The 18 strikeouts breaks the old mark of 17 held by Godin and former ODU standout Justin Verlander (now pitching for the Detroit Tigers). Godin fanned 17 against Navy back on Feb. 18.
In the first inning, Bryan Cipolla's (Plainnview, NY.) groundout plated Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, Va.) to give ODU a 1-0 lead. Patrick Nichols (Chesapeake, Va.) scored from third on a double play in the second to make it, 2-0. The Monarchs third run came in the fifth as Jimmy Miles singled home Steven Dorst (Sacramento, CA.) who led off the inning with a double.
Godin fanned the side in the third and eighth innings and atleast one batter in every inning. He now has 99 strikeouts in 79 innings pitched, and a 2.96 earned run average. ODU pitchers have now thrown five shutouts this season.
Dave Pellegrine went the distance for Northeastern, fanning four and giving up seven hits and three runs. Mike Tamsin and Matt Morizio led NU with two hits each. Mike Zahm led ODU with two hits on the day.
