South Carolina Defeats Monarchs, 3-1 In Baseball Opener

CHARLESTON, SC (Feb. 11)-- Tripp Kelly knocked in a pair of runs and Marcus McBeth knocked in another as the Gamecocks of South Carolina defeated Old Dominion, 3-1 in the first round of the Citadel Trademark Classic.

The Monarchs lone run came in the top of the ninth as rightfielder Brent Sollenberger doubled and scored on a double play. Sollenberger had three of the Monarchs six hits on the day. Pre-season All-American Tim Hummel and, freshman catcher John Ohler and Ross Robertson each had one hit.

Monarch losing pitcher Brian Ross fanned six batters and allowed only three hits in seven innings of work. The Monarchs play Maryland in the second round on Saturday at 10 a.m. South Carolina is now 3-0.
