Baseball: Eure Leads Monarchs to Fourth Straight Win, 8-5

LYNCHBURG, VA. -- Sophomore third baseman Jeff Eure (Pillow, Pa.) knocked in three runs to lead the Monarchs of Old Dominion University to a 8-5 victory over Liberty University Wednesday afternoon. The Monarchs have now won four straight to improve their record to 6-9-1, while the Flames drop to 9-5.

Eure, who is now hitting .375 singled home David Vilardi (Fishkill, NY.)in the first inning. In the third Eure flied out to centerfield, scoring Vilardi again. In the seventh, Eure singled to centerfield, scoring Brent Sollenberger (Chambersburg, Pa.).

Liberty cut a 6-3 lead to 6-5 in the eighth when Scottie Scott hit a two-run homer, but freshman reliever Kevin Evans (Shamong, NJ.) settled down and retired the next three batters in order in the eighth and ninth innings for his first collegiate save.

The Monarchs added two runs in the ninth on a sacrifice fly by senior Joe Troilo (Avondale, Pa.) and groundout run batted in by senior Jason Greiner (Wexford, Pa.).

Four Monarchs had two hits each. They were Sollenberger, Vilardi, Eure and Jeff Musolf (Lakehurst, NJ.). Senior lefthander Brian Ross (Portland, ME.) picked up his second win of the season. He fanned five in seven innings of work and lowered his earned run average to 3.41. The Monarchs host Princeton in a three-game series beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
