NORFOLK, VA--Righthander Jason Godin (Stafford, VA.) pitched a complete game five hit shutout, with no walks and 11 strikeouts as Old Dominion (16-3/ 2-0) defeated George Mason (7-9/2-3), 2-0. It was the second straight shutout for the Monarch pitching staff. The last time ODU pitchers threw back-to-back shutouts was in 1995 when ODU shutout Towson and Liberty.
ODU's first run came in the second inning when Bryan Cipolla (Plainview, NY.) scored from third on a sacrifice fly by Justin Gregula (Washington, PA.). The Monarchs got an insurance run in the eighth as Jimmy Miles (Orlando, FL.) scored on Mike Zahm's (Omaha, NE.) two-out double. Godin is now 4-0 on the year and has 39 strikeouts in 36 innings pitched.
George Mason's Brent Hitz pitched 7.2 innings, walking one and fanning four. In the seventh inning Scott Krieger led off with a doubled down the rightfield line, but he was later thrown out in a run down, trying to steal third. The 16-3 start is the best since 1999. Dana Arrowood led ODU with two hits and increased his batting average to .462 while Jimmy Miles is second at .429.
