NORFOLK, VA. - Tyler Colvin doubled home Taylor Harbin in the top of the seventh inning and that was the only run of the game as Clemson (9-8) defeated Old Dominion, 1-0 Tuesday evening. Freshman David Kopp and Stephen Faris held the Monarchs to two hits, while junior righthander Kevin Gunter (Richland, NJ.) scattered four hits for ODU.
After six scoreless innings, Taylor Harbin reached on an ODU infield error. He then went to third on a throwing error by Gunter in an attempted pick-off. Gunter struck out Travis Storrer, but Colvin then doubled down the rightfield line to give Clemson the lead.
Freshman second baseman Chris Keenan (Chesapeake, Va.) got the Monarchs first hit off Kopp in the sixth inning with two outs. Tyler Belcher (Bristol, Va.) got the Monarchs second hit with one out in the seventh. In the eighth inning Keith Hahn (Valley Stream, NY.) reached on a fielders' choice, then stole second, but advanced no further.
Kopp walked one, fanned two in seven innings. Stephen Faris fanned three in two innings of relief and picked up his first save of the year. Gunter fanned seven, walked three in his longest outing for ODU.
The same two teams will play game two at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
