NORFOLK, VA. (March 17) - Righthander Mike Smith scattered two hits and fanned ten in pitching Richmond to a complete game, 3-1 victory over Old Dominion March 17. The Spiders are now 11-8 overall and 1-0 in the CAA. ODU drops to 10-11-1 overall and 0-1 in the CAA. The loss ended ODU's four-game winning streak.

Smith held the Monarchs hitless until Jared Musolf's (Lakehurst, NJ.) one-out double to left center field in the seventh inning. The Monarchs lone run came in the eighth as Ross Robertson (Chesapeake, Va.) scored from first on a Spiders outfield error on Joe Troilo's (Avondale, Pa.) fly ball to right.

Richmond scored in the second inning as David Reaver singled home Craig Rutter. In the sixth Rich Smith scored on a Vito Chiaravalloti single. The Spiders third run in the top of the ninth came on Craig Rutters sacrifice fly that scored G.R. Schalick from third base. Chiaravalloti and Dan Phipps each had two hits for Richmond.

Monarch starter Parker Friske (Va. Beach, Va.) pitched eight innings, allowing only four hits and striking out a career tying nine batters. The two teams play game two of the conference three-game series Saturday at 2 p.m.
