TORRINGTON, CONN. - Justin Verlander (RHP, So., Old Dominion) from Goochland, Va. took a no-hitter into the eighth inning before a one-out hit and combined with Steven Register (RHP, So., Auburn) for the fourth shutout of the summer as the U.S. National Team defeated Torrington 5-0 on Thursday evening. The U.S. National Team is now 8-0 this summer and 2-0 on the New England Collegiate Baseball League Tour.

Verlander, an All-CAA worked seven and 2/3 innings allowing just one hit and one walk out of 25 batters faced. Verlander struck out 10 and improved to 3-0 for the summer. Torrington's lone hit came in the bottom half of the eighth as Marvin Lowrance knocked a single to left field over the head of third baseman Tyler Greene (IF, So., Georgia Tech).

Team USA took advantage of three errors committed by Torrington to score all five runs in the top half of the first inning. The Red, White & Blue batted around and sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning. Dustin Pedroia (IF, So., Arizona State) hit a one-out single to third base and advanced to second base on the error by Twisters third baseman John Ingram.

Danny Putnam (OF, So., Stanford) knocked a single to center field that was misplayed by center fielder Bryan Cavanaugh allowing Pedroia to score. After Jeff Larish (IF, So., Arizona State) reached base on a fielder's choice, Jeff Clement (C, Fr., USC) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second base. With two outs, Brent Lillibridge (OF, Fr., Washington) hit a hard grounder towards first base that was booted by Twisters first baseman Jim Fasano for the third error of the inning and Larish scored to give USA a 2-0 lead. Tyler Greene (IF, Fr., Georgia Tech), Mike Nickeas (C, So., Georgia Tech) and Eric Patterson (IF, So., Georgia Tech) each collected RBI singles off Torrington starter Matt Torra giving Team USA a five-run cushion.

The U.S. National Team continues on the tour with a Friday evening game on July 11 at 7 p.m. vs. the North Adams (Mass.) Steeplecats at Joe Wolfe Field. Mark Romanczuk (1-0, LHP, Stanford) is the scheduled starter for Team USA. For ticket information, call (413) 664-7227.
