Monarchs Host Rutgers In Three-Game Series

NORFOLK, VA.-- The Monarchs (1-2) open the home season this weekend against the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers (0-0). The first pitch Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Bud Metheny Baseball Complex.

ODU will throw Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.) on Friday against Rutgers' Jack Egbert. On Saturday freshman Ricky Shefka (Kinston, NC.) will throw against Shaun Parker and on Sunday, the Monarchs will throw James Burok (Archbald, PA.) against Tom Malafonte.

Throught three games, Derrick James (Terre Haute, IN) and Allen Strick (Glen Burnie, MD.) have four hits each, while Jess Schoendiest (Belcamp , MD.) leads the team with three runs batted in. Freshman Keith Hahn (Vallen Stream, NY.) leads the team in hitting at .500.

Last weekend, ODU defeated Vanderbilt, 2-0 behind the strong pitching of Verlander. ODU lost to last year's World Series runners-up South Carolina, 10-3 and then to Tennessee, 5-4.
