AL Strikeout Leader Verlander Starts Tonight For Tigers In ALDS

DETROIT, MI --Former ODU pitching great Justin Verlander (ODU'04) will take the mound tonight when the Detroit Tigers take on Oakland in the American League Divisional Series tonight. Game time is 6 p.m.

Verlander was 17-8 with a 2.64 earned run average and lead the American League for the second straight year in strikeouts with 239 in 238 innings of work. Last year, Verlander won the AL CY Young and MVP award with a 24-5 record and a 2.48 ERA.

Verlander pitched six complete games and one shutout this season. He has won 17 or more games six times during his seven-year major league career.

The 6-5 Verlander pitched for ODU from 2002-2004 where the All-CAA pitcher is the all-time strikeout king in ODU, CAA and Virginia Division I history with 427 strikeouts in just 335.2 innings of work.

Verlander will be inducted into the ODU Sports Hall of Fame next Saturday.
