Nicaragua Hands Verlander & Team USA First Loss of The Summer

SANTA DOMINGO, DR. -- ODU's Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.) and team USA suffered their first loss of the summer, dropping a 3-0 decision to Nicaragua in the four game of pool play in the Pan American Games. Team USA completes Pool B play at 3-1. The team is 25-1 overall.

Rostran struck out seven batters and allowed just one walk in picking up the victory for Nicaragua. Verlander pitched three and 2/3 innings and took the loss to drop his record to 5-1 this summer. Verlander allowed three runs on six hits while walking three and striking out one.

Nicaragua (3-0) scored runs in the first and second innings to open up a 2-0 lead. Jimy Gonzalez singled with one out in the first and scored after advancing on two passed balls. After a lead off walk to Reymundo Leyton in the second inning and a base hit by designated hitter Anibal Vega, Nicaragua was able to get a RBI groundout from Edgard Lopez. to a take a 2-0 lead.

In the fourth, Nicaragua increades its lead to 3-0 with a two-out RBI single from Gonzalez. The three-run lead for Nicaragua is the largest lead for an opponent against Team USA this summer. Gonzalez finished the game 3-for-4 with one run scored and a RBI.

With pool play complete, Team USA now awaits seeding for the medal round of the 2003 Pan American games. Quarterfinal play begins Friday, August 8. The semi-finals are scheduled for August 10 with the bronze medal and gold medal games set for August 11.
