NSU Rallies To Defeat Monarchs, 4-2

NORFOLK, VA--Norfolk State (18-27) rallied to score three runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to defeat Old Dominion (27-23) Saturday afternoon, 4-2 at Marty Miller Field.
ODU starter Ryan Yarbrough and NSU starter Justin Bhatti were hooked up in a five inning scoreless pitcher's duel when the Monarchs scored two runs in the sixth.
ODU sophomore leftfielder Josh Eldridge led off the sixth with a hit, stole second and came home on Josiah Burney's sacrifice fly RBI. Later in the inning with two outs and the bases loaded, shortstop Tyler Urps walked to bring home Jordan Negrini for a 2-0 ODU lead.
In the seventh, the Spartans who had but two hits through the previous six innings rallied with the help of four hits and three ODU errors. Killian Strenn led off with a hit, followed by a single from Cameron Day, along with an ODU error allowed Strenn to score all the way from first. Later in the inning pinch hitter Robert Barefoot's two-out single plated Cody Ellis and Zach Markel for a 3-2 Spartan lead.
NSU added a run in the eighth inning as Markel singled home Justin Lee for a 4-2 lead and reliever Ray Morton retired the last four Monarchs he faced for his fifth save of the year.
NSU's Bhatti fanned eight batters through five innings of work in a no decision. Yarbrough pitched 6.1
Innings allowing three runs, two of which were unearned, five hits and five strikeouts.
The Monarchs return to action on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in a non- league game against William and Mary at Hampton's War Memorial Stadium. ODU then plays Longwood on Wednesday night at 6 pm.
