Jan. 5, 2004
NORFOLK, VA. -- Junior righthander Justin Verlander (Goochland, VA.) was named first team pre-season All-American by BASEBALL AMERICA magazine. In December, COLLEGIATE BASEBALL made him a third team selection.
Verlander, a 6-4, 200 pounder was 7-6 with a 2.40 earned run average last year. He fanned an ODU record 139 batters in just 116.1 innings pitched. The record was held by former ODU All-American Kevin Bearse in 1985. Bearse pitched for the Cleveland Indians. He just missed the CAA record of 143 set by Mike Smith of Richmond in 2000.
Verlander was also 5-1 for Team USA and helped lead the squad to the Silver Medal in the Pan Am games last summer. He was the sixth Monarch to play for a USA National Baseball team.
The All-CAA selection ranked 24th nationally in strikeouts at 10.7 per game. He led the CAA in strikeouts and batters struckout looking (48).
