ODU Defeats UNCW, 84-61 As Five Score In Double Figures

NORFOLK, VA--Old Dominion shot a blistering .589 from the field as five players scored in double figures to lead the Monarchs over the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington, 84-61 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.
ODU is now 4-23 overall and 2-13 in the CAA, while UNCW is 10-17 overall and 5-10 in the CAA.
The six Monarchs scoring in double figures were led by senior forward DeShawn Painter with 18, red-shirt sophomore Dimitri Batten with 15 while forward Richard Ross and freshmen guards Aaron Bacote and Keenan Palmore chipped in with 12 points each.
The 84 points for the Monarchs was the most this season as was the .589 field goal percentage along with the 23 assists. Bacote, Palmore and junior guard Donte Hill each dished out six assists on the evening.
The victory gave ODU Its first home win since Nov. 10th against Morgan State, and gave interim head coach Jim Corrigan his second collegiate win of the season.
UNCW led 16-15 with 10:15 left in the first half, then ODU's DeShawn Painter sank free throws to Put the Monarchs ahead, 17-16 and they would never trail again. The Monarchs would outscore UNCW, 20-10 for an 11-point halftime lead of 37-26.
In the second half UNCW would get no closer than nine as the Monarchs led by as many as 24 (71-47 With 6:48 left). ODU shot .621 (18-29) from the floor in the second half and finished the game shooting .589 (33-56).
ODU took care of the basketball, committing only eight turnovers while forcing the Seahawks into 15. ODU had 15 steals as Aaron Bacote led with four and Dimitri Batten had three which helped lead to ODU's 16 fastbreak points.
UNCW had four players in double figures led by Craig Ponder with 16, and Keith Rendleman with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and is now the Seahawks all-time rebound leader 1022 career recoveries.
Red-shirt sophomore Richard Ross led the Monarchs with seven rebounds along with three blocked shots. Ross ranks fourth in the CAA in blocked shots at 1.7 per game. He has blocked 30 shots in ODU's last 10 games.
The Monarchs return to action Sunday night in Hempstead, NY. Against Hofstra in a 7 p.m. televised Contest on Comcast Sportsnet.
