ODU Hosts Annual Big Blue BBQ

NORFOLK, Va. - The annual ODU Big Blue BBQ was held today with new Monarch head coach Jeff Jones. Jones and Monarch student athletes met many of the ODU faithful, then awards were given out.

The Cal Bowdler Award for the most improved player was awarded to Dimitri Batten.Batten scored a career high 25 points against CAA regular season champion Northeastern and 23 points in the Monarchs win over Virginia. He averaged 10.3 points per game this year.

The Mark West Best Defensive Player award went to Richard Ross. Ross blocked 40 shots in ODU's last 13 games for a 3.1 per game average over that stretch. He ranked fourth in the CAA in blocked shots at 1.9. His 2.6 blocked shots per game in CAA only games was the best in the league. Ross scored 17 points in ODU's win over Northeastern.

The Paul Webb Best Represents ODU award went to Donte Hill . Hill scored a career high 16 points at Murray State and had five steals and six assists against VCU. He averaged 8.2 points per game.

The Most Valuable Player award was presented to DeShawn Painter. Painter ranked fourth in the CAA In double-doubles with 11. He scored 26 points against VCU and hauled down 16 rebounds against Northeastern. Painter also scored 22 points against Delaware and added 11 points with 11 rebounds against Virginia. He averaged 13.0 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.
