By ODU Athletics
The 1977 graduate of Fayetteville State coached at Pinecrest High in North Carolina for eight years, winning 111 games before going to Wake Forest as an assistant coach. In 1989 he returned to his alma mater and in just three years led the Broncos to a 22-8 record. The following year, FSU was 20-9 and reached the NCAA Division II regionals. In 1993, Capel became the head coach at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, NC. That season, the Aggies won the MEAC Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
Since coming to Old Dominion in 1994-95, Capel has won 98 games, including a school tying best 25-9 record last year. His Monarch teams have reached the CAA finals three times, winning twice. In 1995, Old Dominion shocked the basketball world with a 89-81 triple overtime win over Big East Champion Villanova in the NCAA first round game at Albany, NY. That win was Capel's 100th career collegiate win. Capel will enter the 1999-2000 season with a 177-126 overall record and a 98-61 mark at Old Dominion.
