NORFOLK, VA - The Old Dominion men's basketball team celebrated Senior Night with a 77-46 rout of Hofstra in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action Saturday night at the Ted Constant Convocation Center.
The Monarchs made a season-high 12 three-pointers to close out their regular season with a 12-14 record, 9-9 in the conference. Old Dominion, who entered the game ninth in the conference shooting just 31 percent from beyond the arc, ignited from downtown to shoot 48 (12-of-25) percent for the game.
Hofstra was held to 46 points, its lowest of the 2002-03 season. Their previous low was 47 against UNC-Wilmington in a 47-71 loss to the first place Seahawks. The Pride ended their regular season campaign at 7-20 overall and 6-12 in the CAA. The 46 points was the fewest scored the Pride since a 46-74 setback to Vanderbilt during the fifth game of 1999-00 season.
Senior forward Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC) led all scorers with 19 points on 4-7 shooting from beyond the arc. Junior guard John Waller (Richmond, VA) was also hot from three-point land, making 4-6 for 12 points. Senior forward Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC) added 10-second half points and nine rebounds in just 19 minutes. Freshman guard Isaiah Hunter (Charlotte, NC) tallied career-high 10 assists to go along with seven points.
Senior guard Rick Apodaca was the only Hofstra player in double digits with 17 points and five boards. Apodaca had scored a career-high 34 points against ODU in their first meeting of the season back on January 18th in his first appearance of the season.
Old Dominion held Hofstra without a point until the 13:40 mark of the first half, building a 14-2 advantage. Waller made three straight treys to put the Monarchs up 16, 29-13, with 5:22 remaining in the half. ODU would continue its barrage from downtown and allow the visitors just two baskets in the final four minutes, taking a period-high 25-point advantage, 44-19, into the break.
The Monarchs maintained control of the contest in the second half as they pushed their lead to as many as 28 early in the stanza. They outscored the Pride 33-27 in the half, continuing their hot shooting going 12-of-25 (48 percent) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. Freshman center Alex Loughton (Perth, Australia) gave the Monarchs their biggest lead, 69-35, with a lay-up with six minutes left on the clock.
Old Dominion out shot the Pride 50 percent (28-of-56) to 25 percent (12-of-48) for the game and forced 21 Hofstra turnovers while committing just 12 of their own. The visitors out rebounded ODU 39-36.
The Monarchs will be the sixth seed at the upcoming 2003 CAA Men's Basketball Championships to be held at the Richmond Coliseum from Friday, March 7th through Monday, March 10th. Old Dominion, who with the win avoids Friday night's play-in games, will take on the third seeded Drexel at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Monarchs split the season series with the Dragons with both squads winning on the opponent's home court. ODU took the first meeting, 72-69, on a Waller three at the buzzer back on January 29th. Drexel returned the favor on February 19th with a 57-62 victory in Norfolk, VA.
