NORFOLK, VA. (July 6) - Old Dominion University head basketball coach Jeff Capel announced July 6 that his son Jeff Capel, III has been named an assistant coach.

"I am thrilled to have Jeff join our staff, " said Capel. "He is an excellent teacher and will be a great asset to our young players, and in recruiting."

Capel, a four year starter at Duke University where he completed his career with 1,601 points (12.4), 433 career assists and hit 220 career three-pointers. He ranks third all-time in Duke history in three-pointers, fifth all-time at Duke in three-point field goal percentage at .398. He is 13th all-time in ACC three-point history.

"I am very excited about getting into the coaching profession, " said Jeff III. "I have always felt that as a player I was a coach on the floor, because I had an understanding of the game. This is a great opportunity to coach with my dad who I respect and look up to. I look forward to the opportunity to help others become better players, be better people, and to help Old Dominion be successful."

As a freshman, he started 28 games as the Blue Devils reached the 1994 NCAA Championship game, losing to Arkansas. As a senior, Capel helped lead Duke as a number two seed where he scored 27 points in a first round win over Murray State and 26 points in the second round loss against Providence.

Capel scored a career high 28 points against Virginia in 1995 and hit five three- pointers in a game twice. The 6-4 Capel earned NCAA Tournament All-Regional honors both as a freshman and senior. In 1997 he was selected to the ACC All-Academic squad.

Since graduating, Capel has played in the Continental Basketball Association for the Grand Rapids Hoops in 1997-98 and 1999-2000. He also played in France.

Capel graduated from Duke in 1997 with a degree in History. He replaces James Johnson who is now an assistant at Elon.
