Monarchs Lose At VCU

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) (Jan. 5) - Skipper Youngblood led the Monarchs with 22 points, Andre McCullum added 14 and Michael Williams had 10, but ODU lost in overtime at Virginia Commonwealth, 73-67.

The Rams (8-4, 1-0 CAA) had tied the game in regulation at 56 on Lamar Taylor's 3-pointer with 12.7 seconds left.

Taylor and Bo Jones each hit two layups in the first 2:01 of overtime to give the Rams a 64-58 lead. Old Dominion (5-9, 0-3 CAA) got no closer than two after that.

Each team had long scoring droughts. The Monarchs went 6:40 without a field goal in the first half before beginning a 19-4 run that spanned halftime, which gave them a 37-28 lead with 16:19 remaining. The Monarchs stretched the lead to 44-32 with 10:57 but then hit only one field goal over the next 7:24.

Jones led the Rams with 19 points and a career-high 10 rebounds. Shawn Hampton had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Taylor finished with 11 points.

Old Dominion missed 19 of 20 3-point attempts and shot 33 percent for the game.

The Rams shot 44.6 percent and outrebounded the Monarchs 41-37.
