Marsh Leads Monarchs Past GW

WASHINGTON (AP) - Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC.)had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Old Dominion pulled away in the final minutes for an 84-76 victory over George Washington Saturday. Four Monarchs scored in double figures on the day.
Marsh shot 9-for-17 from the field and 6-for-7 from the line for the Monarchs, who shot 50.9 percent and hit 19 of 21 free throws.
Marsh's alley-oop slam off an inbounds play beneath George Washington's bucket gave the Monarchs a 75-62 lead with 5:44 left. He also converted three free throws in the final minute to secure the victory for Old Dominion (3-5).
Joining Marsh in double figures were senior Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC.) with 16 points and five assists; freshman center Alex Loughton (Perth, Australia) with 13 points, and junior guard John Waller (Richmond, VA.) with 16 points.
Chris Monroe led George Washington (5-4) with 21 points and seven rebounds. T.J. Thompson added 17 points and seven assists, and Pops Mesah-Bonsu had 13 points for the Colonials, whose two-game winning streak ended.
Monroe and Mike Hall, who had 10 rebounds, hit back-to-back 3-pointers to pull the Colonials to 68-62 with 6:49 left. They cut the deficit to 79-74 on Thompson's three-point play with 1:20 remaining but never got closer.
The Monarchs shot 55.2 percent (16-29) in the first half, including 54.5 percent (6-11) from 3-point range to take a 41-30 halftime lead.
ODU hit its free throws when they counted, going 19-21 (90.5). The Monarchs committed only 13 turnovers, just five in the second half. Old Dominion begins CAA Conference games on Thursday when they host Towson in the Ted Constant Convocation Center at 6 p.m.
