THIS DAY IN MONARCH HISTORY Dec. 21, 1989, All-American Chris Gatling scored 31 points and hauled in ten rebounds as the Monarchs defeated VCU for third place in the Richmond Times Dispatch Tournament, 77-67.... In 1985, Keith Thomas scored 21 points and All-American Kenny Gattison added 13 with 12 rebounds in ODU's 67-55 win over VCU in the Richmond Times Dispatch Tournament.

TROY NANCE CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK Troy Nance was named CAA Player of the Week on Dec. 17. He scored a career high 18 points (14 in the second half) with 7 assists and four steals in the Monarchs 81-67 victory over Coastal Carolina.

GREENE PRE-SEASON ALL -CAA: Senior guard Pierre Greene was selected to the CAA pre-season men's basketball All-CAA team by the league's head coaches and media in attendance at media day on Oct. 31 in Baltimore, MD. As a team, the Monarchs were picked to finish seventh.
Freshman T. J. Waldon (Lakeland, Fl.) will be out 2-4 weeks with a stress fracture of the third metatarsal bone in his left foot...6-2 junior guard Marcus Drewry could see some action this week. He had surgery to repair an unhealed stress fracture in his right foot in October.

GLOBAL SPECTRUM TO MANAGE CONSTANT CENTER Old Dominion University has selected the Philadelphia based firm Global Spectrum to manage the 8,600 seat Constant Convocation Center, which is slated to open in late fall of 2002. The highly regarded company provides management for public assembly facilities across the country, most notably the First Union Center, which is home to the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers, as well as facilities at Temple, South Carolina and Rhode Island.
* General Contractor, S.B. Ballard is ahead of schedule
* Building will be weather tight by March of 2002 to allow for installation of interior finishes and equipment.
* The design for a new Athletic Hall of Fame, to be located in the main lobby of the building is well underway.
DEFENSE All eight Monarch opponents have shot under 50 percent from the floor. Virginia Tech was held to .298 shooting, the lowest since ODU held American to .259 shooting in 1996. The Hokies scored 19 points in the first half, the lowest since VMI was held to11 in 1982. ECU shot .333
MONARCH EXHIBITION GAMES: ODU defeated E.A. All-Stars Southeast, 106-99 in overtime as Ricardo Marsh scored 25 points and hauled in 13 rebounds. ODU shot .473 from the floor and dominated the boards, 63-35. EA All-Stars later defeated North Carolina....
In the second exhibition game, ODU defeated Kentucky ABA, 89-82. Six Monarchs were in double figures. Pierre Greene led with 16 points, six assists and four steals. Ricardo Marsh hauled in 16 rebounds. ODU shot .576 from the floor. Kentucky ABA later beat Tennessee.
