NORFOLK, VA -- T.J. Thompson's lay-up with 42 seconds remaining in the game gave George Washington its first lead of the game as the Colonials held on to defeat the Old Dominion Monarchs, 68-64, in non-conference action at the Fieldhouse this evening. The Colonials improve to 6-3, while the Monarchs drop to 4-2, snapping a three-game winning streak.
The Monarchs raced out to a 15-point lead midway through the first half, never relinquishing the lead in the first stanza. Up by just two with 12:56 left in the first half, Old Dominion rallied for a 16-3 run for a 28-13 edge. Although the Colonials cut their deficit to three with 2:06 remaining (34-41) on a lay-up by Greg Collucci, the Monarchs held to take a four point advantage into the locker room, 37-33.
The Monarch lead was as large as eight on three occasions in the second half, but George Washington continued to battle back. Following a John Waller (Richmond, VA) three pointer at the 16:00 mark giving Old Dominion a 46-38 lead, the Colonials defense held the Monarchs scoreless over the next 3:03 using a 10-0 run to tie the game at 46-46. Old Dominion failed to give up the lead and went back up by eight at 5:16, 62-54. However, the Colonials' defense shut down the Old Dominion offense allowing the Monarchs to score just two more points to close the game. Going on a 14-2 run in the closing minutes, Thompson's lay-up was the first lead change in the game and Tamal Forchion's dunk with 14 seconds left sealed the victory.
Chris Monroe led the Colonials with a game-high 28-point effort. Forchion poured in 13 points, while Jaason Smith registered his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 boards. For the Monarchs, junior Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC) and sophomore Clay McGowen (Westerville, OH) each notched double digits scoring 13 and 11 points respectively.
The Monarchs return to action against former CAA rival East Carolina on Saturday, December 8th at 7:00 p.m.
