NORFOLK, VA.-Old Dominion University head men's basketball coach Blaine Taylor announced the signing of 6-5, 195-pound forward Jason Thompson from Chatham Central High School in Bear Creek, NC.
"Jason was the prototype for what we were looking for," said ODU head coach Blaine Taylor. "We identified him quite early and were just delighted when everything came together. Jason was our number one need in the fall with John Waller being a graduating senior. He is quite an athlete, plays above the rim and is a strong defender. As he gains experience, develops his skills, we believe Jason is going to be a real fine contributor in our program."
Thompson was runner-up for the Yadkin Valley Conference Player of the Year award in 2003 and was the Conference Player of the Year as a sophomore. Thompson averaged 21.3 points per game, and 9.7 rebounds per game for Bill Slaughter, head coach at Chatham Central. A two-time Herald All-Area team selection, Thompson led Chatham to a 22-5 record, and the round of 16 in the state playoffs.
"I was really impressed with the coaching staff at Old Dominion, and I fit in with the team," said Thompson. "I am looking forward to playing in the Constant Center."
Thompson thus far has 1,401 career points and 693 career rebounds. Last year, he scored 33 points in a game against West Davidson and as a sophomore he scored 37 points in a state play-off game against Hendersonville.
"This brings to ten the total of new players we have brought in over the last two years," said Taylor. " Now it's time to develop this crew, let them go and watch them grow."
