Norfolk, VA-The VCU men's basketball team withstood a furious rally by Old Dominion this evening, hanging on to win a crucial CAA contest in overtime, 79-77. VCU improves to 12-6 overall, 4-3 CAA. The Monarchs are now 9-8, 3-4 CAA.
The Rams cruised to an early first half lead thanks to the inside strength of center L.F. Likcholitov, who scored 14 points and hauled in seven rebounds in the game's first 20 minutes. VCU led 42-34 at the break and threatened to put the game out of reach early in the second half, going ahead 60-44 on a Dominic Jones layup at the 10:32 mark.
From that point on Old Dominion began to chip away at the lead. Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC) scored on a layup and Kiah Thomas (Norfolk, VA) sank two straight treys to trigger a Monarch run in the final minutes. A second technical foul on VCU sent Wright to the line with just over two minutes left, and the junior gave Old Dominion their first lead of the game, 69-67. Willie Taylor tied the game for VCU with a pair of free throws with under one minute remaining, but neither team could squeeze out the game-winner in regulation.
Both teams swapped baskets in overtime, with VCU reclaiming a 79-77 lead with just fifteen seconds left. Old Dominion had numerous chances in the final moments, but missed several shots and a tip-in at the buzzer, giving VCU their twelfth win of the season.
The Rams were led by Likcholitov, who scored 18 points with 15 rebounds. Guard Dominic Jones scored 25 with eight boards.
Old Dominion's Ricardo Marsh scored 14 points to go along with 12 rebounds. Wright finished the evening with 21 points and six rebounds.
VCU outshot the Monarchs .456 to .351, but Old Dominion held a 48-40 edge in rebounds. In addition, the Monarchs rolled up a 21-9 lead in offensive rebounds.
Old Dominion will try to bounce back on Wednesday, January 23 at UNC-Wilmington.
