WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 30) - Old Dominion University's 6-10, 250-pound center-forward Cal Bowdler (Sharps, Va.) was the 17th overall pick in the first round of the NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. He becomes the second-highest Monarch selected in the NBA draft.

Bowdler led the Monarchs in scoring (14.7), rebounding (10.0) and blocked shots (2.85). He ranked 13th nationally in blocked shots and 14th nationally in rebounding. A first team All-CAA selection, Bowdler led the CAA in both rebounding and blocked shots in each of the last two seasons.

He recorded 18 double-doubles this year and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds against Seton Hall in the NIT first round. Bowdler scored a career high 28 points against George Washington. He also scored 22 points and hauled in 11 rebounds against the Tar Heels of North Carolina.

Bowdler, who graduated with a degree in sports medicine in May was selected to the All-Tournament squad in this year's CAA Tournament, the Food Lion MVP Classic and the Hawaii-Hilo Tournament. He was the MVP of the Hilo Tournament. The Monarchs compiled a 25-9 record, advanced to the CAA Championship game for the third time in four years and reached the second round of the NIT.

Bowdler joins Chris Gatling (now with Milwaukee) as the only Monarchs ever drafted in the first round. The 6-9 Gatling was the 16th overall pick by Golden State in 1991. Mark West ('83) played for Atlanta this past season.
