Lady Monarchs Set Record for Net Proceeds at Golf Outing
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's basketball program opened last month with their annual golf tournament out at Bide-A-Wee Golf Club in Portsmouth, which turned in the largest net proceeds for a single Lady Monarchs golf outing of all-time.
As one of the most successful athletic fund raising events at ODU, the 2014 event netted approximately $50,000 for Lady Monarch basketball support with the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation. In the 13-year history of the tournament, that began in 2002, over $550,000 has been raised at the annual Lady Monarch Golf Tournament.
Head coach Karen Barefoot was on hand with several members of the women's basketball team along with all of the coaches, staff, fans and of course the participants.
A critical component to the Lady Monarch Basketball program, the money raised from the tournament supports scholarships for Lady Monarch basketball, provides needed annual funds to help student-athletes with computers and other academic essentials and provides the coaching staff with discretionary funds that would otherwise be unavailable.
A committee of volunteers works 12 months per year on the annual event, spearheaded by the tireless efforts of Jerry and Judy Bowman. The Bowman's have been Lady Monarch basketball fans for over three decades, and recently made a significant gift to the ODAF for the basketball practice facility. Jerry is the current president of the ODAF Board of Directors, while Judy has served as the unofficial leader of the Lady Monarch booster club for over 25 years.
The 2014 event was once again sold out with 34 teams participating. During the tournament, Barefoot mingled with all the participants by putting for teams on the 18th green. Members of the Lady Monarch team and coaching staff assisted by helping with registrations and the post-tournament dinner and awards.
