Monarchs Down Dukes, 62-55, in Season Opener

NORFOLK, Va. – In the 82nd all-time meeting and 2016-17 season opener for Old Dominion (1-0) and James Madison (0-1), the Monarchs defeated JMU, 62-55, in front of a crowd of 8,241 at the Ted Constant Center on Friday night.

Brandan Stith and Jordan Baker both registered career highs in scoring and combined for 44 points to pace the Monarchs. Stith scored 23 points and added 11 rebounds for a double-double, while Baker tallied 21 points. 

In the first half, despite the ODU defense forcing 11 JMU first-half turnovers, the Dukes carried a 31-30 lead into halftime. JMU shot 50 percent from both the floor (12-24) and three-point range (4-8) in the opening frame. 

The Monarchs responded with a 15-6 run in the first nine minutes of the second half to claim a 45-37 advantage with 11 minutes remaining in regulation. Overall, the ODU defense held the Dukes to just 24 points on 31 percent shooting in the second half.

ODU forced James Madison into 16 turnovers for the game, while committing just eight. The Monarchs' also recorded 15 team assists to the Dukes' eight. The Monarch defense also held JMU to 39.6 percent shooting from the field and 30 percent from three.

Individually, Ahmad Caver and Zoran Talley each added six points and four assists for ODU, while Aaron Carver registered two points, six rebounds and two blocks. Shakir Brown led JMU with 16 points. For the game, Old Dominion held a 22-8 points off turnovers advantage.
