INDIANA, Pa. – Old Dominion University women’s basketball assistant coach Tom McConnell was named the head women’s basketball coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) on Tuesday morning.
McConnell spent the past two seasons as an assistant on head coach Karen Barefoot’s staff and helped coach eight all-CAA players in addition to guiding the Lady Monarchs to a 19-12 record last season and an appearance in the WNIT.
“I’m excited for Tom and his family in this new opportunity,” said Barefoot. “I appreciate the dedication, hard work and passion towards rebuilding this program over the last two years.”
Returning to his home state of Pennsylvania, his sister Suzie McConnell Serio, an All-American at Penn State, a two-time United States Olympian and former head coach of the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA was recently named the new head women's coach at the University of Pittsburgh.
"It's a privilege to be named the new coach at IUP," said McConnell. "I want to thank Director of Athletics Dr. Condino, President Driscoll, Dr. Luckey, and the members of the search committee for this opportunity. It is something that I am extremely excited about and really looking forward to."
