Statement From Dr. Wood Selig On Today's Conference Announcement
Nov. 27, 2012
"Today has been another active day for conference realignment. As I am sure many of you have learned, Conference USA member Tulane has accepted an invitation to join the Big East in all sports effective 2014. Additionally, CUSA member East Carolina will join the Big East Conference in 2014 for football only. Currently we live in a very fluid state regarding conference affiliation. We are very pleased with our decision to elevate football to the FBS, the highest level of college football, and become one of only three FBS football programs in the Commonwealth - UVA, Virginia Tech, and ODU. We have elevated the national profile of our entire athletic program with our new affiliation in CUSA both with respect to higher levels of competition for the overwhelming majority of our programs as well as national exposure and visibility through an exceptional television package including ESPN, Fox and CBS College Sports. Our revenue sharing prospects are also significantly enhanced by virtue of our CUSA membership.
We will be competing in major metro media markets which should also prove to be beneficial for our ability to brand ODU on a national level as well as recruit and enroll students to our campus from a larger geographical footprint. The move to elevate football and join CUSA was never driven by a desire to be associated with one or two individual institutions, but instead for the multiple reasons just outlined. As an ODAF member, corporate partner, season ticket holder and/or a member of the Hampton Roads community, you have played a vital role in helping us position ourselves in this enviable position. So on behalf of our coaching staffs and our 450 student-athletes who represent our 18 intercollegiate athletic programs at such a high national level, I say thank you for your continued support of ODU athletics. Let's continue to enjoy the journey together." - Wood Selig, ODU Director of Athletics.
