Lady Monarchs Host Oregon in Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday Morning

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University women's lacrosse team hosts their first ever Breast Cancer Awareness game on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. when they host the Oregon Ducks at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.

In partnership with Beyond Boobs, the Lady Monarchs and Old Dominion are playing Saturday's game in honor and in memory of those who have fought breast cancer and to raise awareness about the disease. On February 15th, 2013, the Old Dominion women's basketball team lost one of their own to this disease, volunteer assistant to the head coach, Sara Jones, who battled breast cancer three times. 

Old Dominion (3-7) is coming off a tough 16-12 loss to No. 9 Virginia on Wednesday where they trailed by just one at halftime as sophomore midfielder Christina Rea scored a game-high five goals for the second time this season in a contest. The Lady Monarchs lead the CAA and are among the national leaders in groundballs per game at 19.20 per outing. 

Sophomore midfielder Ashmore Standing has also scored five goals in a game twice this season along with Rea and leads the team with 21 goals and 25 points. Rea has added 18 goals and 23 draw controls whiile junior attacker Emily Austerberry has also scored 18 goals. Senior attacker Meredith Rogers leads the team with seven assists and has added 10 goals. Defensively, senior Alexandra Burns has 22 groundballs and caused 13 turnovers. Sophomore goalkeeper Karen Hayde has 709 saves while allowing 154 goals and has scooped up 23 groundballs.

Oregon (4-5) has dropped their last four games after starting the season 4-1 which included a 16-14 overtime setback at Connecticut in their last game on Tuesday. The Ducks have had a flavor for overtime this season as they defeated Vermont in triple overtime back on March 4, 14-13 and lost in the season-opener in double overtime to No. 12 Dartmouth, 8-7, on Feb. 23. The Ducks have wins over Cincinnati and High Point along with Davidson while falling to No. 2 Florida, San Diego State and Marist.

For the Ducks, junior midfielder Shannon Propst powers the offense with 12 goals and 17 assists while senior attacker Kate Cathell adds 16 goals and seven assists and freshman midfielder Carly O'Connell has chipped in 10 goals and nine assists. Junior midfielder Nikki Puszcz leads the team with 11 caused turnovers while scooping 14 groundballs in addition to scoring 11 goals and five assists along with a team-best 23 draw controls. Seeing the majority of time in goal, senior Salliebeth Finnegan has 48 saves and 76 goals against her on the year.

In their only previous meeting, coming last season in Eugene, Oregon scored a goal in the last minute to edge ODU, 10-9. The Lady Monarchs were down by four goals early in the second half and rallied to take a lead only to see the Ducks come back late to earn the win.
