For veteran Old Dominion women's lacrosse head coach, US National Team coach, and College Lacrosse Magazine's Coach of the Century Sue Stahl, 2001 should be a productive season. Stahl, who was recently inducted into both the US National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Virginia Lacrosse Hall of Fame, is excited about facing a tough schedule with a team that is laden with veteran players, including eight returning starters.

"We are looking to utilize our abilites individually in a strong team concept," said Stahl, whose 15 returning players each bring something to the table. "There is a hustle and willingness to play hard for 60 minutes. We need to use that to work hard and efficiently each time out." Leading the core of veteran performers will be co-captains Dana Wisniewski (Collegeville, Pa.) and Brooke Thomas (Whiteford, Md.). Wisniewski, an IWLCA Academic All-American and an All-CAA first team selection from one year ago, returns to the midfield where she collected 25 goals and five assists last season and ranked as the team's second-leading scorer. Thomas will return as the anchor to the Lady Monarch defense, collecting a team-high 51 ground balls last season.

"Dana will be a crucial player for our team this year," said Stahl of one of her four seniors. "She will need to take a game over when necessary."

"Brooke must continue her strong play, keeping the defense aware of what's happening," Stahl added of her junior defender. "She's a real spark plug."

In addition to their co-captains, the Lady Monarchs will have balanced representation in the form of six other returning starters. Junior attack Jen Heister (Fayetteville, NY) will return as the team's leading scorer, netting 27 goals and three assists for 30 points last season. Returning in very good physical condition, Heister was a CAA All-Tournament selection last season and will look to control the tempo of the game and organize the Lady Monarchs in transition. Senior goaltender Laurie Koller (Collegeville, Pa.) will add experience on the defensive end for Stahl. This will be Koller's third year in net. Last season, she started all 16 games for Old Dominion and collected an 11.70 goals against average and a .432 save percentage and looks to be an even more important factor this season.

Danielle Hensil (Havertown, Pa.) and Marlaine Smith (Gaithersburg, Md.) are a pair of sophomores who will look to continue the impact that they have made on the Lady Monarchs. Both freshman starters one year ago, the tandem will be important in the midfield. Hensil's speed and situational recognition will make her a scoring threat, as she was last season with 21 goals and eight assists. Smith should come into her own this year with power and offensive skill that allowed her to score 20 goals and two assists last year.

Junior Kendra Finger (Boyertown, Pa.) and sophomore Erin Lindsey (Audubon, Pa.) are the final two starters from last season. The duo combined for 61 ground balls last season and should give the Lady Monarchs depth on defense. Sophomore Suzanne Wosczyna (Phoenixville, Pa.) will look to aid Old Dominion after sitting out last season with a stress fracture.

"We had a good fall ball season," Stahl commented. "We're looking to be able to play focused and consistent."

This year's Lady Monarch schedule will provide a challenge to that focused consistency. It is, like many before, dotted with national and conference powerhouses. In 2001, Old Dominion will take to the road against CAA foes James Madison and Loyola, both of whom made it to last year's final four. The Lady Monarchs will also host national powers Virginia, Penn State, and defending national champion Maryland.
