Swimming & Diving Drops Meet With UNC-Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell in its first CAA competition of the 2009-2010 season. The Monarchs fell 167.5-127.5 to the eight-time defending conference champions, while the Lady Monarchs fell, 171-121.
Both the ODU men and women fall to 1-1 on the year.
Icelander Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland) led the way on the men's side with three victories. The sophomore Monarch touched the wall first in the 100 breast (56.39), 50 free (21.23), and 100 free (47.08).
Other top finishers included junior Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.) and senior Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) clocking in at number one and two in the 200 free. Loccisano took first time a time of 1:43.63, closely followed by Gangwer 1:44.19.
Ramkvist brothers finished back-to-back in the in 200 back. Junior Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden) took first place logging a time 1:52.92, while older brother Kristian (Bjarred, Sweden) took second clocking in at 1:55.45.
On the women's side, the Lady Monarchs saw first place times by sophomore Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), junior April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), and freshman Jessica Hubert (Newport News, Va.). Harladsdottir won the 100 breast (1:06.05), 200 breast (2:23.33), as well as the 200 IM (2:08.32). Barrientos meanwhile captured the top time in the 100 back (57.33). Hubert placed first in the 100 fly with her time of 2:08.83, followed by sophomore Maddie Stile (Fairfax, Va.) in second registering a time of 2:11.05.
The Monarch and Lady Monarch swimming and diving teams will return home for a two-day meet featuring CAA competition. The men will host Drexel and William & Mary while the women welcome Drexel, William & Mary, Northeastern, and James Madison at the J.C. "Scrap" Chandler Pool November 6th-7th.
