Women's Rowing Places Second at Kerr Cup

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The Old Dominion women's rowing team placed second at the 44th Annual Kerr Cup Regatta held on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
Old Dominion was second overall in team scoring with 35 points, ahead of Army (29), Villanova (28), Philadelphia (17), VCU (13), and Robert Morris (6). Drexel lead all teams with 61 points.
The day started with the Freshman/Novice 4 showing continued improvement finishing in third place ahead of Villanova B and VCU. ODU finished in a time of 8:18.
The varsity schedule was extremely competitive with CAA rival Drexel.
The Second Varsity 8 outpaced Villanova by 24 seconds but managed to place second in a time of 7:02.3, just behind Drexel in 6:59.5.
The race for the Lela Kerr Cup with the Women's Varsity 8 proved to be one of the most exciting races of the day with several lead changes throughout. In the third quarter of the race, Drexel made a strong push to get ahead of the Lady Monarchs. ODU pushed back into Drexel's lead in the final 500 meters but Drexel prevailed by two seconds. claiming the title in a time of 6:55.03. The Lady Monarchs crossed the finish line with a time of 7:02.3.
"This weekend was a successful one for the whole team," noted head coach Dan Garbutt of his team's performance. "The women executed their races well and are very excited about the final championship races of the season."
The Old Dominion women's rowing team returns to action at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships (April 25th) and the Dad Vail Regatta (May 7-8).
