Fellsmere, Fla. – The Lady Monarch rowing team capped off its week long spring training trip to Fellsmere, Florida, by winning three of four races in the Governor’s Cup on Canal 54. ODU won the Varsity 8 against NOVA Southeastern and Florida Institute of Technology, while also taking first in the Novice 4 “B” section against NOVA Southeastern.
The Lady Monarchs Varsity 8 that defeated NSU was comprised of five freshmen and three varsity rowers that had rowed together only once before. Four of these young women had less than 30 minutes rest before heading back on the 2K course and defeating FIT by more than 27 seconds. FIT and ODU battled over the first 1000 meters before the Lady Monarchs opened things up over the second half of the course.
The Novice 4 races were a tough challenge for all of the athletes due to the head wind and the fact that this was the first race ever for many of them. And although there were some rough spots, the experience was important for all.
“I'm really proud of the way our team worked over this inaugural spring training week,” said head coach Heather Weisel. “We rowed over 100,000 meters in one week and were able to remain injury free. It was an incredible effort from such a young team and we were very encouraged by the race results. The headwind proved to be even more of a challenge, but everyone handled it. We're taking this season one race at a time and our goal is to learn from each race and to take that information forward to the next race."
