Norfolk, Va. – Following a grueling two-week period of walk-on tryouts, ODU rowing coach Heather Weisel has released the Lady Monarchs initial roster as they prepare to begin competing as a varsity sport this fall. The walk-on tryout drew interest not only from experienced rowers, but also from several female athletes who were just being introduced to the sport.
The athletes spent the first week learning the stroke on the rowing machines, while also being introduced to a body circuit workout and several core exercises. Following the first cut at the end of week one, the tryouts moved to the water where many of the young ladies got their first practical experience in a shell.
“After two straight weeks of walk-on tryouts, I am so thrilled with our final roster,” said Weisel. “Our walk-ons have blended so quickly with our freshmen recruits both athletically, and more importantly, in the spirit of starting this program. This is a special group of young women who have all demonstrated their competitiveness and their desire and ability to lay the foundation for a national caliber team here at ODU.”
The final 29-person roster includes 14 scholarship athletes and 15 walk-ons, six of whom came over from the ODU club rowing team.
With the roster now set, Weisel and the Lady Monarchs will now focus their attention on their first race which is a little more than two weeks away. ODU will travel to the prestigious Head of the Charles in Boston on Oc. 18-19.
