Lady Monarch Lightweight 4+ Places Third at Head of the Hooch

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Lightweight 4+ boat's third place finish and a top ten placing by Lady Monarchs in the Open 8+ division highlighted the Old Dominion women's rowing results at the Head of the Hooch this weekend.

The Lady Monarchs were among the 5,000 rowers and 1,400 boats participating in the 30th Anniversary of the Head of the Hooch, a 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) head race on the Tennessee River.

"I am very proud of the way our team raced this weekend," said head coach Dan Garbutt. "To be near the front end of three out of four events is exciting heading into winter training. The focus of this team throughout the fall season has been to improve each week. They have done just that."

The Lightweight 4+ finished in third place in the 12 boat field in a time of 18:43.1. Georgia Tech won the race with their finish time of 18:33.0 followed by Tulsa in second rowing to a time of 18:36.3

In the Women's Open 8+, the Lady Monarchs placed 10th in the field of 29 in a race that featured some of the top rowing teams in the country in Clemson and Texas. The Lady Monarchs raced to a time of 17:02.6. Clemson were the winners of the race capturing a top time of 15:57.80

The Women's Championship 8+ took 13th in the race. Rowing against 35 other boats, ODU finished the event with a time of 16:47.9. Texas posted the top time rowing to a first place finish of 16:01.1

In the Women's College & Club Novice 8+ race, the Lady Monarchs finished in 22nd among the 46 boats participating. ODU rowed to a time of 18:41.9 with the University of Miami, who the Lady Monarchs will face this spring, claimed the top spot in a time of 17:50.9.

The Old Dominion women's rowing team will return to the water on Sunday, November 14th at the Rivanna Romp in Charlottesville.
