Lady Monarch Varsity Four Wins Kerr Cup
April 18, 2009
Philadelphia, Pa. - On a beautiful sunny spring day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, the ODU Lady Monarch Varsity Women's 4 won the Grand Final of the Kerr Cup Regatta.
In their third race of the day in a three and a half hour span and into a strong headwind, ODU raced the first thousand meters out in front of the pack with Robert Morris A. RMU made a move at the thousand meter mark, which the Lady Monarchs promptly answered with a power push of their own and cleared RMU by 1250 to row to an open water finish.
In the first official sanctioned CAA Championship, the Lady Monarchs rowed their lineup of five frosh, one sophomore and two seniors to a fifth place finish in the WV8. ODU finished nine seconds ahead of George Mason's sixth place 1st Varsity boat.
The 2nd Novice, in a brave move, took on a field of much more experienced 2nd Varsity boats. They held their own, however the experience gap proved to be a bit much in the end with ODU finishing sixth.
"We had a great day. The V4 had a phenomenal day racing so well in so many events in such a short time frame,” said ODU head coach Heather Weisel. “Heading into the CAAs we knew these two events were going to be tough, but to race in the inaugural CAA Championship was important to all of us. There was no chance these young athletes were willing to pass up this opportunity in our first year. I'm so proud of their composure and their guts. This has been what has defined this team all year, and we're looking forward to using the things we learned today about racing, to continue our progress in our final two races. "
