NORFOLK, Va. – The Old Dominion University women’s basketball staff and team took part in this year’s Play Day 2013 on September 22, at Tarrallton Park in Norfolk, Va. The ODU women’s basketball team and former Lady Monarch point guard Jazzmin Walters teamed up to give back to their community in a big way.
Kids and families from all over the Hampton Roads area came together for a day filled with free fun along side the Old Dominion women’s basketball team, Playful City USA and Norfolk Recreation, Parks and Open Space. Activities included music and recycling, while games were played involving basketball, hula-hoops and egg races, just to name a few.
Perhaps many fans of the Lady Monarch basketball program best remember Jazzmin Walters at Old Dominion University for her size or more importantly her 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left in overtime to knock off the No. 4 seed Virginia (24-10). After Walter’s drilled the game-winner, Tiffany Green blocked a tying 3-point attempt just before the buzzer, giving the Lady Monarchs an 88-85 victory over UVA and a trip to the Greensboro Regional.
In that same game before the magic occurred, fifth-seeded Old Dominion (31-4) fell behind 85-81 in overtime, but ended the game on a 7-0 run. Walters began the run with a free throw, Jessica Canady added a three-point play with 1:25 to go, and then the 5-foot-2 Walters made the shot from her hip just before the shot-clock buzzer to send the Lady Monarchs' crowd at the Ted Constant Center into a frenzy.
