Norfolk, Va. -- Approximately 100 Old Dominion freshmen student-athletes were in attendance over the course of two sessions earlier this month for the first event of the semester, “Think Before You Act”. Hosted by the ODU Student-Athlete Development Team, the event’s featured speaker was Ragean Hill, ODU Associate AD for Student-Athlete Academic Services and Senior Women’s Administrator.

The event raised attention to recent Title IX and sexual assault issues in the news and provided general education on university policies and procedures regarding these topics. Throughout the evening, student-athletes discussed current events, watched training videos, and participated in interactive trainings to help gain knowledge and perspective on the important issues.

The interactive sessions allowed student-athletes to walk through scenarios and identify appropriate ways to handle each scenario. This portion of the training also allowed student-athletes to openly discuss the impacts of each scenario and gain different perspectives from their peers.

Many student-athletes took advantage of the open forum to share and seek wisdom from their peers. The open dialogue provided all student-athletes with the opportunity to see different points of view and broadened their perspectives regarding on how the scenarios can impact people differently in real life.

The event was designed in coordination with recent NCAA initiatives to provide additional education and complete annual trainings related to Sexual Assault and Title IX issues for student-athletes and staff. In order to assist schools provide proper training the NCAA has provided free access to myPlaybook for the 2017-18 academic year. MyPlaybook consists of training modules designed to promote student-athlete well-being through healthy behavioral strategies that address substance abuse, sexual assault, mental health, time management and related topics. All ODU student-athletes will begin the online training in February and successfully complete the modules by the end of the month.

The next events on the ODU Student-Athlete Development Team calendar will take place January 31 as sophomores will complete a Resume Workshop co-sponsored with ODU Career Development Services and the juniors will attend a LinkedIn Networking presentation.
