Monarchs Go 2-2 at the Virginia Duals

HAMPTON, Va. – The Old Dominion (5-4, 3-1 MAC) wrestling team took a fifth place team finish at the Virginia Duals on Saturday night. ODU earned wins over Kent State and Chattanooga and losses to No. 13 Virginia Tech and Oklahoma. 

Opening the dual against No. 13 Virginia Tech, No. 19 Michael McGee avenged a 2017-18 season loss with a pin over Joey Prata. At 133, Killian Cardinale fell to nationally-ranked Korbin Myers 14-5. Sa’Derian Perry edged Mitch Moore to extend the ODU lead. At 149 pounds, Kevin Budock suffered a 8-3 setback to NCAA Qualifier Ryan Blees. Larry Early suffered just his third loss of the season to B.C. LaPrade by an 8-4 decision. The Hokies won the final four bouts, including two in the bonus to win the dual, 31-9.

In their match against the Sooners, No. 19 McGee collected bonus points for the second time at the Virginia Duals with a 17-2 technical fall. At 133, Cardinale was trailing 6-1 after the second period but eventually fell to Tony Madrigal, 12-10. Highlighting the day, No. 11 Perry defeated No. 7 Dom Demas with a late takedown to win 4-3. Suffering the second Monarch loss, Budock dropped a 7-3 decision at 149 pounds. After a forfeit at 157 pounds, Shane Jones collected a 7-2 win by decision to put the Monarchs back in the dual. At 174 and 184, ODU suffered two losses by pin and decision, respectively. After an ODU forfeit at 197, Ali Wahab closed out the dual with a 11-5 decision over Jacob Boyd. Oklahoma ultimately came out on top with a 27-14 final score. 

Earning his fourth and final win at the Virginia Duals, McGee secured a 3-2 win over Chattanooga's NCAA Qualifier Alonzo Allen at 125 pounds. Another close bout for Cardinale, he dropped a 4-3 decision. Joining McGee going undefeated this weekend, Perry secured a 7-4 win at 141 pounds. After suffering back to back losses, Budock won his bout over Tanner Smith by a 6-3 decision. After an ODU forfeit at 157, Jones and Wright collected bonus-point wins in their weight classes to extend the ODU lead. At 197, Tim Young reentered the lineup and battled to a 7-6 win by decision. Despite a 3-2 loss at heavyweight for Wahab, the Monarchs topped Chattanooga 21-15.
