CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Three North Carolina wrestlers earned falls to lift the Tar Heels past the 25th-ranked Old Dominion wrestling team, 28-12, Saturday night in Chapel Hill. UNC improved to 1-0, 0-0 (ACC) while the Monarchs fell to 0-2, 0-1 (MAC) on the season.

"I thought Madrigal controlled his match against his opponent and did what he had to do get the win," head coach Steve Martin said. "Seldon Wright has been wrestling consistently this season. He continues to improve in all three positions. Dechow looked good in all three positions and has regained his form from last year. Beazley did a good job wrestling on the mat and on his feet. We need to continue to improve as a group in all three areas of our wrestling. Each competition is teaching us more about this young team and what we need to do to reach our goals at the NCAAs in March."

Starting at 125, UNC's James Szymanski was awarded a defensive fall over ODU's Steven Simpson in the second period in a match that Simpson led, 4-2. Alex Madrigal responded at 133 with a 3-2 decision over Tyrone Klump to cut the Tar Heel lead to 6-3.

After a first period pin from All-American and top-10 ranked Joey Ward at 141 over Kenan Carter, Troy Heilmann and Joey Moon extended the UNC lead to 19-3 with back-to-back wins.

No. 14 Seldon Wright briefly stifled the Tar Heel momentum at 165, earning a hard-fought 8-6 victory over Jack Clark on the strength of three takedowns.

The Tar Heels answered back at 174, however, as All-American Ethan Ramos secured a third period fall over Jared Swan to put the dual meet out of reach.

Monarch veterans Jack Dechow and Kevin Beazley earned back-to-back decision victories at 184 and 197, as Dechow turned in a controlling 8-3 win over Elijah Kerr-Brown while Beazley used a second period cradle to take down Danny Chaid, 3-2.

In the dual's final match, the heavyweights traded second and third period rideouts, but Cory Daniel's four-point opening period cemented a 4-1 victory over Will Hilliard as well as the Tar Heel's 28-12 dual triumph.
