Monarchs Downed by No. 10 NC State, 25-13
NORFOLK, Va. -- ODU's 11th-ranked Jack Dechow earned a 7-4 decision over No. 17 Mike Machiavello in the night's lone bout between top 20 opponents, but visiting No. 10 NC State prevailed over the Monarchs, 25-13, Tuesday night at the Ted Constant Center. NC State improved to 4-1 on the year while ODU dropped to 1-4 in dual meets.
NC State jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead after the first three bouts, as Tommy Cox picked up an injury default victory at 125, Sean Fausz defeated Alex Madrigal, 11-5, at 133 and All-American Kevin Jack racked up a series of nearfall sets to tech. fall Kenan Carter, at 141.
The Monarchs got on the board after 149, as fifth-year senior Michael Hayes connected on three double leg takedowns to pick up a 13-10 victory over Beau Donahue.
NC State freshman Thomas Bullard improved the Wolfpack lead to 18-3, picking up an 8-0 major decision over the Monarchs' Shane Jones at 157.
ODU's Seldon Wright put together big first and second periods to jump out to a lead over Brian Hamann in the 165 bout, as Wright held on for the 12-7 win to narrow NC State's lead to 18-6.
In a battle of true freshmen at 174, NC State's Nick Reenan earned a 10-4 triumph over Antonio Agee to extend the Wolfpack lead to 21-6.
At 184, in the lone ranked matchup of the night, takedowns in the first and third periods by No. 11 Jack Dechow pushed the fifth-year senior past No. 17 Mike Machiavello, 7-4.
The teams traded major decision victories at 197 and 285, as No. 10 Kevin Beazley blanked Tyler Johnson, 10-0, at 197, before NC State's Mike Kosoy beat Will Hilliard, 10-2, at 285, to give the Wolfpack the 25-13 dual meet victory.
