NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion wrestling team fell to Buffalo, 22-14, Friday night at the Ted Constant Center before 405 fans. The Bulls improved to 7-4, 2-2 (MAC) while the Monarchs dropped to 4-7, 1-4 (MAC).
The Bulls got off to a fast start after Kyle Akins and Bryan Lantry picked up back-to-back bonus point victories at 125 and 133, respectively.
Kevin Budock, wrestling in his first home dual meet at the Ted Constant Center, swung some momentum back in the Monarchs' favor when he topped Jason Estevez with a takedown in the first sudden victory period to win, 3-1 OT. Fifth-year senior Michael Hayes continued to roll through the month of January with a big 12-2 major decision over Buffalo's 29th-ranked Colt Cotten.
Buffalo answered back at 157 and 165, however, as Alex Smythe defeated Austin Eads, 2-1, and Tyler Rill mounted a series of cross ankle pick takedowns to pick up a 13-5 major decision over No. 15 Seldon Wright at 165.
In the second overtime bout of the night, it was true freshman Antonio Agee who emerged victorious at 174, scoring a defensive takedown to beat Muhamed McBryde, 6-4 OT. Ninth-ranked Jack Dechow followed up with a major decision at 184, as the fifth-year senior scored a takedown with one second on the clock to pick up the bonus point victory.
The Bulls closed out the dual meet with narrow decision victories at 197 and 285, as James Benjamin scored a defensive takedown with four seconds left in the first sudden victory period to defeat Kevin Beazley, 3-1 OT, at 197, and Jake Gunning topped Will Hilliard, 4-2, at 285.
